The Toxic Ten Ingredients to Watch For In Personal Care Products

Every week we see new messages about research studies highlighting what is and isn't harmful to us these days.  What isn't always available are easy, clear specifics about ingredients that help us make real world choices when selecting the products we use for ourselves and our families.

Enter Environmental Defence's Just Beautiful campaign, which highlight The Toxic Ten - the top 10 ingredients they recommend we try to avoid in personal care products (cosmetics, moisturizers, hair care, soaps, etc).

After several conversations with fellow moms about toxin concerns, we attended a great seminar today highlighting some of these Toxic Ten, getting to know the folks at Environmental Defence and what their mission is all about.

One of the key questions that struck us - are products banned from children's products and toys still making contact with our kids through the lotions, potions and products we use ourselves?

We asked specifically what products and ingredients are of most concern to moms in constant contact with babies & young children:

  • Phthalates are of primary concern - watch out for them in scented products, fragrances and nail polishes.
  • Fragrances are tricky - they don't often list ingredients, something the team at Environmental Defence is fighting to change.  Strong scents that linger may be a warning sign, phthalates are often used to make that scent last longer.
  • Take a look at what's in your lotions and creams.
  • Watch it on antibacterial hand sanitizers, ingredient Triclosan is on the toxic list.

What we liked:  Environmental Defence's messages are easily understood, and their approach isn't overly academic or radical.  We love the practicality of this pocket guide (download a printable version you can keep in your wallet).

This is an interesting topic, so watch for more info over coming months..  This fall we also hope to bring some seminars to our momstown community.
