Then one morning, the toothy grin, the pearly whites, weren't so pearly. My little guy had a brown tooth, front and center. Faced with an immediate visit, all of a sudden I didn't have time to prep my little hillbilly for the trip the way I wanted to. It was a quick Google search for recommended locations and a lot of talking up the cool chair and stickers. Luckily our visit was smooth sailing, due in large part to the amazing hygienist (and the cool chair and the stickers...major dentist swag).
When I do it again, I will do it differently. Here's what I learned from our visit, and some helpful tips to keep in mind when you prep your wee ones for their first trip to the Dentist's chair.
1. Kids don't have a preconceived fear of the dentist. Don't pass on your anxieties and talk about the visit like you would any other first for them.
2. Pediatric Dental Clinics have doctors and hygienists who are specifically trained and highly experienced dealing with children, and it shows.
3. Talk to your child about what to expect: laying in the chair, using a giant flashlight to see the teeth, opening wide, counting teeth, cleaning, and pictures of the teeth. The more your little one knows the more confidence he will have when he's there.
If you visit early, often and do your homework, Dentist visits are almost enjoyable...almost.

P.S.
Pediatric Clinics also have fantastic lobbies (and treat bags) for kids.
The things you pointed are all true! Teaching children about the good things going to the dentist is a must. Having regular dental checkups will keep their teeth healthy and will also improve their overall wellbeing. And of course, picking a pediatric dental clinic is the easiest way to do it. Excite them with freebies if you will, but don't impose the fear you have for your dentist. I so agree with you on this. Thank you for sharing!

It is quite a common thing among children to get their teeth stained and discolored. They may not take care of their health as much we do. So it is the duty of we, the parents to look after them. Dental treatment is always a beneficial thing to improve the appearance and functionality of teeth. It helps you to keep your teeth health for long. If you are interested in family density, then it is a perfect thing that helps to maintain the dental health of the entire family.

ReplyDeleteYour tips are really helpful to parents out there who are planning to bring their child to a dentist! But of all you shared, I agree with the first one the most. Kids don't have a preconceived fear of the dentist. Many parents think that, because they hate going to the dentist, their children are feeling the same way too. This post is a mind-opener. Thank you for this one! And good luck on your following dental visits!

Your last statement is the key to have a smooth-sailing appointment with your dentist. You have to visit him regularly for him to monitor your dental health. It's also important that you follow his advice because it will all be for nothing if you just disregard it. You won't attain that white and healthy teeth if you don't maintain a good oral habit.
